PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (RTS) – how to apply, claim subsidy and earn

The central govt has launched an ambitious scheme for individual household for getting free electricity by the name of PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, also called Residential Rooftop Solar. The proposed scheme will result in addition of 30 GW of solar capacity through rooftop solar in the residential sector, generating 1000 BUs of electricity and resulting in reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifetime of rooftop systems. Also, It is estimated that the scheme will create around 17 lakh direct jobs in manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales, installation, O&M and other services.

  1. Subsidy for 1 crore household Indians.
  2. Subsidy of Rs. 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW systems and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher.
  3. This scheme is applicable for house owner only, not for renter.
  4. The house should have open shade-free rooftop space between 130 sq. feet to 300 sq. ft. area.

PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

The Prime Minister in the cabinet meeting has approved ‘PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ with a total outlay of Rs.75,021 crore for installing rooftop solar and providing free electricity up to 300 units every month for One Crore households. The Prime Minister had launched the scheme on 13th February, 2024.

In this scheme, any interested household across India can apply online for PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and get it installed by the empaneled vendor. You can apply for 1 kW, 2 kW, 3kW or higher. Suppose you have installed the solar panel for 3kW and your consumption is only 1 kW, then you can earn additional  income through sale of the rest surplus power of 2 kW to DISCOMs

Subsidy provided in PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

The scheme provides a Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for Residential Rooftop Solar of 60% of system cost (Equipment cost and installation cost) for 2 kW systems and 40% of additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity. The CFA will be capped at 3 kW. At current prices, this will mean Rs 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW systems and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher.

The subsidy is given to customer within 30 days in the bank account, after final installation and submission of commissioning report.

How to earn from Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (RTS):

The customers will earn through selling of extra generated electricity units to DISCOMs. Through this scheme, the retail households will be able to save electricity bills as well as earn additional income through sale of surplus power to DISCOMs. On an average, a 3 kW RTS system will be able to generate more than 300 units a month for a household.

Step 1: Register in the portal with the following:

  • Select your State
  • Select your Electricity Distribution Company
  • Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
  • Enter Mobile Number
  • Enter Email
  • Please follow as per the direction from the portal

Step 2 :

  • Login with Consumer Number & Mobile Number
  • Apply for the Rooftop Solar as per the form

Step 3 :

Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once you get the feasibility approval install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.

Step 4 :

Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter.

Step 5 :

After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal.

Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days..
